Recession Proof Your Interior Design Or Decorating Business

If you make your life as an interior designer or decorator the current economy has got to be hurting your business. When the economy is slow, many people who might otherwise have to hire an interior designer or decorator are forced to move as a 'non-essential services at the bottom of their list of priorities. If you have not yet felt the pinch as the preparation of your business could take a drastic nose dive during the economic recession. Nobody really needs interior design services, especially in the non-time.

is the fact that so many of your days spent on the business side of design, negotiating with contractors, waiting to reach the delivery, billing, collecting quotes, and so on. That's all the time that do not directly generate revenue for your interior design or decorating business, and when the client accounts were already poor, it can really hurt your financial situation.

Maybe you're one of the many trained interior decorators who have ended up working in retail for 100% commission. If the economy worsens and work solely on commission, where does it leave you? Even in good times, if you work for 100% commission may be your own boss and have freedom to market for new customers, rather than being tied to any store.

When I decided to rule in my life back and do something that would allow me to get out of my creativity, I thought a career in interior design. I struggled with that option countless times across the 20 years period when I was happy in my work. I researched, and even talked to many interior design schools in my "past life", but for some reason I never took the step to enroll. I decided with my BA, MBA, and several decades of experience in business, they are in class for two to four years with kids 20 years my junior was not something I wanted to do.

Never mind tuition costs and a huge loss of revenue, while a student. Then who knows how many years of experience as a designer or decorator will be required after graduation to really start making money. I wanted to unleash my creativity and love for decorating, but I definitely need to start making money in the shortest possible time. So, I started my home staging company.

As soon as my job is running, the money coming in. In my second year as a home stager I was making up to $ 10,000 per month. Compare that with the median annual salary of $ 36,150 per year for interior designers at Salary.com this year. I am very happy I trusted instinct!

If you're an interior designer and decorator, and do not make enough money, consider adding Home Staging to your service mix or switching to more profitable career as a beginning of a staggering total.

Here are some ways business home staging can be more profitable than commercial interiors:

O as a home stager you get the chance to work with different kinds of people than you would as an interior designer. Generally, only very high income individuals hire interior designers, which limits your target market. Home stagers work mostly with clients in the upper middle income level that gives you a much higher percentage of the market, and increases the number of projects available for you to do.

O Home stagers enjoy greater volume of projects than interior designers because everyone is so short in nature. One interior design project can take months to complete (especially when you factor in time to wait for the upholstery done, or furniture included), but the average home staging project takes only a few hours or days. There is no way I could have decorated hundreds of homes within a couple of years as the new interior designer, the way I like the new home stager. With such a quick project, a home stager is able to complete (and get paid for) a much larger number of projects per year than an interior designer who is often the client work on hold through no fault of their own.

o When the economy is slow, people eliminate the non-basics. Interior design or decorating isn't really high on "essential items list", especially when the choice should be made about what to give, and there is no real deadline to redecorate or renovate a room. In uncertain times, interior design moves way down the priority list, while home staging move up. No matter how slow the economy and how the real estate market is in decline, there will always be people who absolutely have to sell and move to a specific date. Divorce, job relocation, job loss, mounting debts, death in the family or birth often get people to put their house on the market, even if it is not the best time to sell. When a homeowner is desperate to sell your house, the home stager will often be involved, because the seller stands to make a handsome profit from their services. When people have less time, less money or less equity in their home, they need a home stager so that they can get everything you can out of selling your home! As a home stager, your creativity and talent for decorating will serve you well in slow economic times and slow real estate market.

I especially love the amount of creative freedom I have as a home stager. Because my clients know that I'm decorating their houses for sale and not for them to live in, I'm able to execute their creative vision without interference or taking into account their preferences. I can not imagine wasting hours sitting with a client who can not decide which color they want for their bathroom, or to choose fabrics for your curtains. My clients do not care what I choose as long as your home will sell faster because of it. In addition, my home staging business is very profitable which every entrepreneur wants.

If your interior design business is not working as you hoped, it's not too late to make a change to live more creatively meet the career that is also more profitable. Do some research in the field of home staging. This is a career that is almost "recession-proof ".
